LAFC Cruise to a 3-0 Victory Over Real Salt Lake in The US Open Cup

12 Jun

The Black and Gold start their US Open Cup journey today as they take on Real Salt Lake tonight at 7:00 PM. Last year, LAFC fell short, losing to the Houston Dynamo in penalties in the semifinal. Real Salt Lake were out in the fourth round last year.

It didn’t take long for the Black and Gold to get on top, as Carlos Vela slotted one past RSL goalkeeper with his left foot. Nick Rimando had no chance at the ball and we were up 1-0 in the 8th minute.  It also did not take long for Latif Blessing to get taken down. Kyle Beckerman came in hard on his ankle and he was down for a few minutes.

Up to the 30 minute mark, LAFC had plenty of chances, but only the goal from the 8th minute. Christian Ramirez took a beautiful touch, chipped the keeper and the ball hit the post. RSL defense came up big on Carlos Vela shots. Going into the half, LAFC were up 1-0, with goals coming.

Starting the second half, Latif Blessing is still getting physically destroyed by Salt Lake. Think Vela vs Portland. Quick note, Pablo Sisniega is playing amazing. Another note, Lee Nguyen puts the ball in the back of the net and gives LAFC a 2-0 lead in the 65’ minute.

And then came FIto Zelaya, making his LAFC debut. #ZelayaWatch

90+2, LAFC had a free kick right outside the box. Fito stepped up to take it and blasted one… off the post. Luckily Adama Diomande was there to finish it off and give LAFC their 3rd goal of the night.

LAFC will take on either the Galaxy or Orange County FC next week.
